Good morning to everyone, but especially to …

GERRIT COLE

The Yankees didn’t win against the Orioles last night, but Gerrit Cole’s return was a highlight.

Cole made his 2024 debut after missing 75 games due to elbow inflammation. Though he had a rough start with two doubles and an earned run in the first inning, he settled down afterward.

Cole pitched four innings, striking out five while allowing three hits and two earned runs. He wanted to pitch one more inning but was convinced by Aaron Boone to call it a night.

The stats weren’t mind-blowing, but considering the circumstances, it was a positive step forward for Cole. His velocity was particularly impressive.

  • Perry: “Encouraging for Cole and the Yankees is that his fastball topped out at 97.5 mph. Overall, the 28 fastballs he threw averaged 95.1 mph.”

The Yankees lost 7-6 in extra innings, putting a slight damper on Cole’s return. But New York still holds first place in the AL East with their top pitcher back in action.

Honorable mentions:

  • Tiger Woods received an exemption for signature PGA Tour events.
  • Florida’s Jac Caglianone set a new school home run record with his 75th homerun.
  • “Malcolm in the Middle” star Frankie Muniz will make his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series debut.
  • Astros’ Hunter Brown is trending up after adding a sinker to his pitches.
  • Novak Djokovic will compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics post knee surgery recovery.
  • The United States, ranked fifth in Copa America Power Rankings.
