New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe made a costly mistake in Friday night’s 5-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox.
In the third inning, with runners at the corners and one out, Ben Rice hit a grounder to first. Romy Gonzalez fielded it and threw to second, but his throw was off, leading to a tag play instead of a force out.
Volpe didn’t hustle home and got tagged out before scoring. DJ LeMahieu could have helped by prolonging the rundown. Check it out:

Afterward, Volpe admitted his mistake, saying he thought the ball was foul. “I just got to hustle all the way,” he told reporters. “Just got to be better.”
Yankees’ Struggles:
Manager Aaron Boone also spoke about needing better performance: “We got to play better than that, yeah, no question… especially when it’s hard and things are hard to come by.”
Fans might think this is just another frustrating moment in a tough season.
Volpe’s recent performance has been under scrutiny. He started strong but has struggled lately with a .207/.229/.293 line over 31 games. The Yankees have also been slipping in standings.
Adding fuel to the fire, Trent Grisham faced criticism for lack of hustle during Thursday’s game against Cincinnati Reds.
Aaron Judge’s personal hitting coach Richard Schenk criticized Yankees’ player development on X: “They’ve lost 13 out of 18 while he’s hitting like an MVP. The Yankees offensive player development is terrible.”
Boone responded calmly: “People are going to say things… you can’t get all consumed with all that stuff.”
The Yankees continue their series against the Red Sox on Saturday afternoon.
What do you think about Volpe’s mistake? Should he have hustled more?
