The Yankees are back on top with the best record in baseball.
For seven weeks earlier this season, the Yankees played poorly, but Friday night’s win against the Tigers (NYY 3, DET 0) and losses by both the Orioles to the Red Sox (BOS 12, BAL 10) and the Guardians to the Brewers (MIL 5, CLE 3) put New York back at number one.
Here are Saturday’s MLB standings:
- Yankees: 73-50
- Phillies: 72-50 (0.5 GB)
- Guardians: 72-50 (0.5 GB)
- Dodgers: 72-51 (1 GB)
- Orioles: 72-51 (1 GB)
On August 11th, both Yankees and Orioles were tied at a record of 70-49, but Baltimore led due to a tiebreaker based on their season series lead.
Recent Performance:
Starting strong with a record of 45-19, things turned sour for the Yankees between June and July when they lost fifteen out of twenty-six games; during one stretch they went just four wins against fourteen losses ! Only White Sox had it worse in that period.
The tide has shifted recently though—winning thirteen out of their last eighteen games puts them as baseball’s best during this span.
Fans might feel optimistic about this turnaround.
However, having the best record now doesn’t secure anything yet—their position could change quickly if they lose while Baltimore wins due to that crucial tiebreaker.
Upcoming Games:
This weekend sees two more games against Detroit before hosting Cleveland next week for three matches. The final showdown with Baltimore is set for September at Yankee Stadium.
