The MLB offseason is still buzzing with potential trades and signings.
Despite a flurry of activity during the winter meetings, many free agents are yet to find new homes, and teams are eyeing trades to boost their rosters. First basemen seem to be in high demand this season.
Teams on the Hunt for First Basemen
The Yankees need a solid first baseman after losing Anthony Rizzo to free agency. They’re trying to fill the gap left by Juan Soto’s move to the Mets, and adding some power at first base might do the trick. Meanwhile, the Astros struggled offensively at first last year. They could try Isaac Paredes or Zach Dezenzo but might also look outside for fresh talent. The Mets have made waves by signing Soto, but Pete Alonso is now a free agent, leaving them with a hole at first base that Mark Vientos could fill unless they decide on another trade involving Brett Baty.
Christian Walker’s departure leaves the Diamondbacks needing someone like Pavin Smith or another option entirely. Over in Seattle, the Mariners want more offense; Luke Raley is versatile but not necessarily their long-term answer for first base.
The Cubs have shown they’re ready to make bold moves . Michael Busch is likely starting at first but has experience elsewhere too—perhaps paving way for a big-name acquisition.
Fans might wonder if their favorite team will land one of these sought-after players.
Free Agents on Deck
Among those available are Pete Alonso and Christian Walker. Alonso stands out with his impressive home run record—226 homers over six seasons! At 30 years old though, he may not be as hotly pursued as you’d think for right-handed sluggers these days. Walker blossomed late into his career; he’s now 34 but offers solid stats: .250/.332/.481 over recent seasons along with stellar defense skills.
Others like Carlos Santana or Paul Goldschmidt could be valuable short-term additions despite being past prime years.
Possible Trade Moves?
Rumors swirl around Cody Bellinger being shopped by the Cubs; he’s flexible enough to play both outfield (including center) and first base—a great fit for Yankee Stadium’s short porch if they snag him! Nolan Arenado might switch positions if it helps facilitate any deals even though moving from third seems odd given his defensive prowess there—but hey stranger things have happened!
Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s future remains uncertain as well since Blue Jays haven’t yet become contenders again post-rebuild attempts… Imagine prying Vlad away from Toronto!
