Yankees prospect Jasson Domínguez has hit another roadblock.
While recovering from Tommy John surgery, he injured his oblique and will be out for about eight weeks. Yankees manager Aaron Boone shared this update on Thursday.
Domínguez got hurt while checking a swing during a game with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday. Last season, at just 20 years old, he made an impressive debut by hitting a home run in his first career plate appearance against Justin Verlander. His stats included a .258 batting average, .303 on-base percentage, and .677 slugging percentage over eight games before injuring his elbow.
Domínguez’s Journey
R.J. Anderson ranked Domínguez as the 30th-best prospect in baseball heading into this spring. After months of recovery from surgery, Domínguez returned to Triple-A on June 4. He played four games in Class A and ten in Double-A before that. In nine Triple-A games, he boasted a .389 average with three doubles, two homers, and two steals.
Currently, the Yankees’ roster is full with Aaron Judge back after being hit by a pitch and players like Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo holding down the outfield spots. Giancarlo Stanton remains healthy as the designated hitter too.
Fans might feel frustrated with yet another setback for Domínguez.
This new injury means more time away from the field for Domínguez and delays any improvements he could make to his game in the short term. It’s definitely not good news for the Yankees organization even if it’s not immediately obvious how much it affects them right now.
