One day after not hustling on a ground ball, Gleyber Torres was benched by Aaron Boone.
Torres didn’t play in Wednesday’s game against the Mets, with Oswaldo Cabrera taking his spot at second base. This decision came after Torres’ recent struggles both at the plate and on the field.
This season, Torres is hitting just .215 with seven home runs in 80 games. That’s quite a drop from his career average. He also explained he felt some groin discomfort during Tuesday’s game, but Boone mentioned it wasn’t serious.
Boone’s Decision
When asked about benching Torres, Boone initially gave a vague response: “We need him to go. We need him to get going, especially through this stretch… We need him to be a presence in the middle of our lineup.” By Wednesday, Boone clarified that Torres needed some time off to reset mentally and physically.
Boone admitted that Tuesday night’s incident played a role in his decision: “That certainly got my attention.”
Fans might think it’s about time for such a move given Torres’ recent performance slump.
The Yankees entered Wednesday’s game with a strong record of 52-29 but have been struggling lately, losing five of their last six games. They are also missing key players like Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton due to injuries. Meanwhile, the Mets have been on fire this June with an impressive 14-6 record.
What do you think? Should Torres have been benched sooner?
