Earlier this week, Aaron Boone said the Yankees hadn’t decided on Jasson Domínguez.
On Sunday, the Yankees made their move by adding four players to their roster, but Domínguez wasn’t one of them. Instead, they brought back Anthony Rizzo and called up Duke Ellis, Ron Marinaccio, and Scott Effross. To make room for Rizzo, they had to designate Josh Maciejewski for assignment since he was on the 60-day injured list with a fractured arm.
The Yankees used the extra slots from the September roster expansion and also created space by sending Will Warren and Ben Rice to Triple-A on Saturday. Domínguez has been recovering from injuries this season. He played only one MLB game this year in the Little League Classic against Detroit Tigers as their 27th player .
Domínguez’s Situation:
Domínguez missed a lot of time due to Tommy John surgery and an oblique injury. In his 51 minor-league games, he hit .313/.370/.500 with nine homers and 15 stolen bases. Fans might feel frustrated seeing him wait so long for his chance.
Back in August, Brian Cashman commented on Domínguez: “He’s healthy… injuries prevented him from getting much performance… waiting in wings if needed… playing mostly centerfield… no lane for us to bring him.”
It seems like the Yankees will stick with Alex Verdugo despite his struggles at bat this season. Verdugo’s stats aren’t great: .232/.292/.360 (82 OPS+) with 11 home runs and one stolen base.
Some think keeping Domínguez in minors might be strategic; if he wins Rookie of the Year next season, they get a draft pick. The Yankees haven’t confirmed if that’s true though .
New York wraps up their series against St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday while holding a slim lead over Baltimore Orioles in AL East.
