The Chicago White Sox lost to the Oakland Athletics on Monday night, 5-1, extending their losing streak to 21 games.
This loss ties them with the 1988 Baltimore Orioles for the longest losing streak in American League history. The White Sox, now with a season record of 27-88, haven’t won since July 10. They are one of only three teams since 1900 to lose at least 20 consecutive games.
Here’s the full list of teams with such long losing streaks:
– Philadelphia Phillies (1961): 23 games
– Baltimore Orioles (1988): 21 games
– Chicago White Sox (2024): 21 games and counting
– Montreal Expos (1969): 20 games
– Philadelphia Athletics (1943): 20 games
– Philadelphia Athletics (1916): 20 games
– Boston Americans (1906): 20 games
Ky Bush made his debut as a starter for the White Sox but struggled early on. He walked three batters in the first inning and gave up a sacrifice fly to Tyler Nevin. Bush pitched four innings total, allowing three runs on two hits and five walks while striking out three of the twenty batters he faced.
Game Recap:
The game saw some action in the fourth inning when the White Sox managed to tie it up. However, Max Schuemann’s single brought in two runs for the Athletics, regaining their lead. Lawrence Butler then hit a pinch-hit home run in the sixth inning, making it a solid 4-1 lead for Oakland.
According to researcher Doug Clawson, before this game, whenever trailing after six innings this season, they were already at an abysmal record of 0-55. After Monday’s loss? Now it’s even worse at 0-56.
Fans might feel like this is never going to end; it’s just so tough watching them lose again and again.
Currently on track for having one of the worst winning percentages since the Cleveland Spiders’ infamous season in 1899 (23.5%), they face another game against Oakland Tuesday night. A loss would mean setting a new record for futility not seen in over a century!
What do you think about their chances? Can they turn it around or will this nightmare continue?
