The Chicago White Sox ended August by tying their record for most losses in a single season, with 106.
They lost their ninth game in a row to the New York Mets, 5-3. Now sitting at 31-106, they matched the 1970 team’s unfortunate record. “A lot of things have been going against us,” said Grady Sizemore. “We need that break just to kind of help the morale in that clubhouse.”
With a dismal 4-35 record since the All-Star Game, they’re on track to finish with a staggering 37-125. The modern MLB record for losses is held by the 1962 Mets with 120. Only two other teams have reached over 115 losses recently: the Orioles in 2018 and the Tigers in 2003. Even if they miraculously win more than half of their remaining games , they’ll still end up with at least 118 defeats.
White Sox Struggles:
Saturday’s defeat marks their third streak this season of losing nine or more consecutive games. Earlier this summer, they suffered through a brutal stretch of losing 21 straight games and another streak of dropping 14 games consecutively. On Sunday, they’ll try to avoid hitting double digits again when they finish their series against the Mets.
Fans might think it’s hard to stay optimistic given these results.
Regardless of Sunday’s outcome, their upcoming schedule looks tough: three away games against the Orioles, three more on the road facing the Red Sox, and then three home matches against the Guardians before finally meeting another team with a losing record.
What do you think about this challenging season for them?
