One of baseball’s longest losing streaks has finally ended. The Chicago White Sox managed to snag a win after nearly a month, beating the Athletics 5-1 at Oakland Coliseum.
Jonathan Cannon deserves much of the credit for this victory. He pitched six innings, allowing just one run and striking out five batters. He skillfully escaped several tight spots, including leaving the bases loaded in the first inning and getting out of a jam with a double play in the second.
The bullpen also stepped up significantly. Previously struggling with an ERA of 6.72 since the All-Star break, relievers Dominic Leone, Chad Kuhl, and John Brebbia managed to keep the A’s from scoring further.
Offensive Highlights:
Andrew Benintendi gave the team an early lead with his two-run homer in the fourth inning. This was all they really needed to secure their win . Additional runs came from Andrew Vaughn’s RBI single and a wild pitch in the sixth inning, followed by Lenyn Sosa’s single in the ninth that sealed their victory.
Here’s Benintendi’s home run:

The White Sox are now part of a rare group of teams that have lost at least 20 games in a row since 1900:
– 1961 Philadelphia Phillies: 23 games
– 1988 Baltimore Orioles: 21 games
– 2024 Chicago White Sox: 21 games
– 1969 Montreal Expos: 20 games
– 1943 Philadelphia Athletics: 20 games
– 1916 Philadelphia Athletics: 20 games
– Fans might think this is quite an achievement!
Tuesday’s win stopped them from nearing MLB history’s worst losing streak.
The worst record ever recorded in modern MLB is held by the ’62 Mets at 40-120. The White Sox currently stand at 28-88 and could end up finishing with a record of around 39-123 if trends continue.
For now, though, they can enjoy this hard-earned victory, something they haven’t felt since July 10th.
What do you think about their chances moving forward?
