The Minnesota Twins could have new owners by the time players take the field for their season opener on March 27.
After nearly 40 years of Pohlad family ownership, the team’s value has skyrocketed from its modest $44 million purchase price in 1984. Today, Forbes puts the Twins’ worth at a cool $1.46 billion.
“There’s a lot of people within geographic striking distance,” an insider told The Athletic, noting that the team’s price tag isn’t as eye-watering as some other MLB franchises. “It’s a solid ballclub that frankly can be purchased at a price that is less than astronomical.”
The sale announcement came last October, and some interesting names have popped up as potential buyers. Mat and Justin Ishbia, who already own the NBA’s Phoenix Suns, have shown serious interest in adding the Twins to their sports portfolio.
Baseball’s been seeing quite a few ownership changes lately. Since 2019, three teams have gotten new owners:
– The Baltimore Orioles ($1.725 billion)
– The New York Mets ($2.475 billion)
– The Kansas City Royals ($1 billion)
The Washington Nationals and Los Angeles Angels have also tested the waters for potential sales, though nothing’s come of it yet.
The Twins have been pretty consistent on the field – they’ve won at least 45% of their games in almost every season since 2016. But they’ve been dealing with some tough breaks off the field, especially when it comes to TV money. The messy state of local broadcast deals has made it really hard for the front office to spend big and build a true championship contender.
A new owner could be just what the team needs to shake things up and maybe finally make that push for a pennant.
