The Minnesota Twins have cut minor-league catcher Derek Bender for aiding opposing hitters.
Bender, playing for the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels, was found telling opponents what pitches were coming. This revelation came after a game that knocked his team out of playoff contention. The Mussels lost to the Lakeland Flying Tigers on September 6, with Bender allegedly tipping pitches during the second game. In that match, the Flying Tigers scored four runs in the second inning against pitcher Ross Dunn.
Sources say Bender told teammates he wanted the season to end early . It’s unclear if the Flying Tigers knew about this beforehand. Lakeland coaches informed Bender’s coaches after their 6-0 victory, which sealed Fort Myers’ playoff fate.
Draft and Performance:
Bender was drafted by the Twins this year as a sixth-round pick from Coastal Carolina University. In 19 games with Fort Myers, his stats were .200/.273/.333 with two home runs and two doubles. At Coastal Carolina, he had a strong junior season hitting .320/.422/.520 with 11 homers in 60 games.
Fans might think this is a bizarre turn of events for such a young player.
