The cownose stingrays living in Tropicana Field have been relocated to The Florida Aquarium after Hurricane Milton hit.
Despite the hurricane’s damage, the stingrays stayed safe in their 10,000-gallon tank at the stadium, but now they’re settling into their new home at Stingray Beach. This move was announced by The Florida Aquarium on X.
Craig Johnson from the aquarium shared that “the cownose stingrays handled the storm well,” and with help from Tampa Bay Rays staff, they were taken care of during this time. Now back at the aquarium, they’re being watched closely to ensure they’re eating and acting normally.

Fans might feel relieved knowing these creatures are safe amidst all the chaos. The storm caused a lot of damage in Tampa and beyond; Tropicana Field’s roof was shredded by winds reaching 100 mph. Originally meant as a staging area for first responders, it faced unexpected destruction.
The Rays expressed sadness over the widespread damage but emphasized their focus on helping both community and staff. They’re thankful no one got hurt at their ballpark and plan to assess Tropicana Field’s condition soon while working with law enforcement for security.
Since 2006, Tropicana Field has been home to these stingrays through a partnership with The Florida Aquarium. Now they continue this journey under different circumstances—what do you think about their move?
