The Dodgers have lost another pitcher to injury.
Rookie River Ryan left Saturday’s game against the Pirates (LAD 4, PIT 1) after 4 2/3 innings due to forearm tightness. Manager Dave Roberts confirmed on Sunday that Ryan’s season is over. They are still figuring out what to do next.
Ryan was placed on the injured list, and Landon Knack was called up to take his spot. Ryan felt discomfort in his forearm during the third inning but managed to continue after using a massage gun. However, by the fifth inning, it tightened again, leading Roberts and the medical team to pull him from the game.
Forearm tightness can sometimes mean elbow ligament issues and might lead to Tommy John surgery, though not always. Ryan joined the rotation because many Dodgers pitchers are injured. Here’s what their rotation looks like now:
Current Rotation:
1. Tyler Glasnow
2. Clayton Kershaw
3. Jack Flaherty
4. Gavin Stone
5. Landon Knack
6. Justin Wrobleski
Fans might be worried about how this will affect their playoff chances.
Bobby Miller, last year’s rookie star, has also struggled with injuries and performance this year with an 8.07 ERA in seven starts before being sent down to Triple-A.
Ryan is a former infielder who came from the Padres in a trade for Matt Beaty in March 2022 and has impressed with a 1.33 ERA in four starts this year.
The Dodgers have used more starting pitchers than any other team this season—17 different ones! Despite all these challenges, they are still doing well with a record of 68-49 but have been struggling lately with only a slight lead in their division.
