The Kansas City Royals have picked up two veteran outfielders from waivers.
Tommy Pham joins from the St. Louis Cardinals, while Robbie Grossman comes from the Texas Rangers. Both players are eligible for postseason play since they were added before the September 1 roster deadline.
Pham, at 36 years old, was initially traded to the Cardinals by the Chicago White Sox before the July 30 trade deadline. However, as the Cardinals didn’t improve their standings, Pham ended up on waivers and was eventually designated for assignment. He had wanted to join a contending team and now gets that chance with the Royals.
This season, Pham has hit .254/.321/.378 with six home runs over 93 games between his time with the White Sox and Cardinals. He’s still owed part of a $3.5 million salary for 2024 and will be a free agent after this season.
Grossman, aged 34, is batting .227/.333/.324 with three home runs in his 71 games split between Chicago and Texas this year.
Royals’ Playoff Hopes:
As of Saturday, the Royals hold a record of 75-61. They are just behind the Cleveland Guardians by 2.5 games in the AL Central but currently hold second place in the wild-card race. Fans might find it exciting to see if they can clinch their first playoff spot since winning it all in 2015.
