The Boston Red Sox and Alex Cora are discussing a new contract, aiming for a multi-year deal.
Cora’s current contract is ending, and ESPN says the new deal could be around three years and $21.75 million. This would make him the second-highest paid manager after Craig Counsell from the Brewers. The team hasn’t confirmed anything yet.
Cora has been with the Red Sox for six seasons (2018-19, 2021-24). The team is currently 54-46, just one game away from an American League wild-card spot. They did better than expected this season compared to their last-place finishes in both 2022 and 2023 when they went 78-84 each year. In 2021, they had a strong season with a record of 92-70 and reached the ALCS .
Red Sox History with Cora:
In his first year as manager in 2018, Cora led the Red Sox to an impressive franchise record of 108 wins and a World Series title. The following year wasn’t as great; they finished with an 84-78 record. Then came Cora’s one-year suspension due to his involvement in the Houston Astros’ sign-stealing scandal in 2017 when he was their bench coach.
After his suspension ended in 2020, Boston brought Cora back quickly. Under his leadership, they’ve achieved a total record of 494-416 (.543), winning one World Series title and making another ALCS trip. These wins put him fourth in franchise history behind Joe Cronin (1,071), Terry Francona (744), and Pinky Higgins (560). With a new multi-year deal, he might surpass Francona’s win total.
Fans might think this extension shows how much trust the team has in Cora despite past controversies.
This offseason saw Counsell set a new bar for managerial salaries with his five-year, $80 million contract with the Chicago Cubs.
