Veteran pitcher Rich Hill is making a return to the major leagues.
The Boston Red Sox are bringing back Hill, signing him to a minor-league contract on August 15. After a strong performance with Triple-A Worcester, where he pitched two scoreless innings, he’s being added to the active roster.
Hill, now 44 years old, had a challenging 2023 season with the San Diego Padres and Pittsburgh Pirates, posting a 5.41 ERA over 27 starts and five relief appearances. Throughout his career spanning parts of 19 seasons, he has an ERA+ of 107. This marks his fourth time with the Red Sox; previously pitching for them in 2010-12, again in 2015, and then in 2022. In total, Hill has played for thirteen different teams at the major-league level.
Red Sox’s Pitching Woes:
The Red Sox are struggling with their pitching lineup as they fight for a playoff spot in the American League. Lucas Giolito had elbow surgery earlier this year; Bryan Mata hasn’t pitched due to hamstring and shoulder issues; Garrett Whitlock was out after just four starts because of elbow surgery; and Chris Murphy suffered from UCL problems before he could even start . Recently acquired James Paxton also went down with a calf injury.
Fans might think it’s about time they got some good news.
Currently holding a record of 67-64, Boston is five games behind the Minnesota Twins for the final wild-card spot in the American League. According to SportsLine, their chances of making it to postseason stand at just 17.3%.
