Phillies Extend Manager Rob Thomson After NLDS Exit

The Philadelphia Phillies have decided to keep Rob Thomson as their manager until 2026, despite a recent playoff loss.

Dave Dombrowski, the team’s president of baseball operations, shared that the entire coaching staff will also be back in 2025. He believes they did well by leading the team to 95 wins, even though the season ended on a sour note against the Mets. “Anytime you have a disappointing finish, which we did, (we consider making changes). It’s also hard to put that on their backs,” Dombrowski explained.

Thomson stepped into his role in June 2022 after Joe Girardi’s departure and has since guided the Phillies to significant achievements like winning the NL pennant and reaching the NLCS in 2023. The team’s overall record under him stands at an impressive .575 winning percentage.

Season Struggles and Team Performance:

When teams falter during playoffs, coaches often take the heat. This was true for Philly when their bullpen struggled in crucial moments of the NLDS. Across four games, relievers gave up 17 runs over just under 13 innings! Every bullpen pitcher allowed at least one run—ouch!

While Nick Castellanos and Bryce Harper performed well with a combined .379 batting average including three doubles and two homers, other players didn’t fare as well. They managed only one double and one homer out of 100 at-bats—a tough pill for fans who expected more from their lineup.

Fans might wonder if keeping Thomson is wise given these struggles; some could argue fresh leadership might help.

As offseason approaches, roster changes loom but remain uncertain in scale or impact. One thing’s clear: Thomson stays put while Phillies tackle offseason tasks head-on.
