The Phillies have signed Cristopher Sánchez to a four-year contract extension.
This new deal includes options for the 2029 and 2030 seasons, covering his pre-arbitration and arbitration years, and possibly two free-agent years. Financial details weren’t shared yet.
Sánchez, now 27, has become important for the Phillies’ rotation. Since early 2023, he’s started in 32 games and relieved once. Over these games, he pitched 176⅔ innings with a solid ERA of 3.21 (131 ERA+), striking out 162 batters while walking only 40 unintentionally. In 2024, his fastball speed increased by more than 2 mph . His career ERA+ stands at an impressive 112 over four MLB seasons with the Phillies. Originally signed by the Rays from the Dominican Republic in 2013, he was traded to Philadelphia in November of 2019 for Curtis Mead.
Phillies’ Rotation Strength:
Sánchez is a crucial yet often overlooked part of what many consider baseball’s best rotation in 2024. The Phillies’ starting pitchers—Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Ranger Suárez—boast an MLB-leading starters’ ERA of just 3.02.
