The New York Mets are nearing the end of their last homestand this season.
After Sunday, they will hit the road for six games in Atlanta and Milwaukee. Depending on how the wild-card race goes, these might be Pete Alonso’s final home games with the Mets.
Alonso told the New York Post he has a “gut feeling” that won’t happen. When asked if it was because he thought the Mets would make the postseason or if he’d sign a new deal, he said “both,” but added there have been no secret extension talks. “I love it here. It’s a really special place,” Alonso shared with the Post.
Alonso has only played for the Mets since being drafted in 2016. Over six seasons, he’s hit .250/.340/.518 with 225 home runs and 20.1 Wins Above Replacement.
Contract Talks:
No one knows how much Alonso wants for his next contract yet. He turned down a $158 million offer over seven years back in 2023, which makes sense since Paul Goldschmidt got $130 million for five years before that.
Fans might think it’s tricky to give big contracts to older right-handed first basemen.
The Mets finish their series against the Nationals on Wednesday with an 83-68 record, tying them with Arizona for second wild-card spot and two games ahead of Atlanta Braves.
Next week, they face off against Braves in a three-game series that could decide who gets an edge if there’s a tie at season’s end.
But first, they have to deal with four games against NL East leaders Philadelphia Phillies while Braves play Miami Marlins.
What do you think about Alonso’s future?
