Paul Skenes might be one of the hottest names in baseball right now, but don’t expect to find him playing video games in his spare time – even the one with his face on the cover.
The Pittsburgh Pirates’ star pitcher just landed a coveted spot on MLB The Show 25’s cover, sharing the honor with two other rising stars. But he’s surprisingly honest about his gaming skills, or lack thereof.
“I’ll probably go in, log in, get my card and log back out,” Skenes admitted during a recent appearance on “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” “I’m not a video game guy.”
Here’s the funny part: This elite athlete, known for his incredible precision on the mound, says he can’t handle a gaming controller.
“I hate it,” he confessed. “It’s the worst. I don’t have the finger dexterity to press the right buttons at the right times, so I just don’t do it.”
The irony isn’t lost on baseball fans. Skenes dominated real-life batters last season with a stunning 1.96 ERA across 23 starts. He struck out 170 batters and posted an impressive 0.947 WHIP – numbers that would make any video game player jealous.
But when it comes to virtual baseball? He’ll stick to the real thing.
Maybe someone should tell him there’s a practice mode in the game. Then again, with his real-world talent, he probably doesn’t need it.
