Padres’ right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. was hit in the left elbow by a pitch from Brewers’ starter Colin Rea during the third inning on Friday night.
Despite being in visible pain, Tatis stayed in the game to run the bases and even played the next inning. However, Tyler Wade pinch-hit for him when his spot came up again.
The Padres later announced that Tatis suffered a “left tricep contusion,” which means he has a bruise on his upper left arm muscle. This is relatively good news since it could have been something more serious involving the elbow bone.
Injury Concerns and Testing
Usually, after such an announcement, players undergo several tests like X-rays and CT scans to check for further damage. So while there’s some hope now, we might get more information on Saturday.
Tatis is incredibly talented but has had many injuries throughout his career—hamstring, back, shoulder (multiple times), oblique, and wrist injuries have all sidelined him before.
This season though, he managed to stay healthy through 80 games with impressive stats: hitting .279/.354/.468 with 14 doubles, a triple, 14 home runs, 36 RBI, 50 runs scored and eight stolen bases.
Fans might be thinking this injury could be yet another setback for Tatis who just can’t catch a break!
The Padres have had an up-and-down season but were holding onto the third NL Wild Card spot before this game. Losing Tatis for a long time would make it very hard to keep that position. So everyone’s hoping it’s just a minor bruise.
