Shohei Ohtani hit his 200th MLB home run on Saturday.
The homer came during the fifth inning of the Dodgers’ game against the Tigers, thanks to a pitch from Keider Montero that found too much of the plate. The ball left Ohtani’s bat at 107.8 mph and traveled 373 feet, marking his 29th home run this season, which leads the National League.
Career home run No. 200 for Shohei Ohtani!
Ohtani’s Impressive Stats
Ohtani has reached this milestone in just 794 games and 2,848 at-bats. Before this game, he averaged an impressive 41 home runs per every full season (162 games) he’s played in MLB.
What’s even more amazing is that Ohtani is not just a power hitter; he’s also a top-notch pitcher when healthy. This year, though, he isn’t pitching because he’s recovering from Tommy John surgery after signing a $700 million deal with the Dodgers last winter. So now he can focus fully on hitting . His current stats for this season are .315/.398/.638, making him a strong candidate for NL MVP as we head into the second half of the season.
Fans might be thrilled about how well he’s doing despite not pitching this year.
Before joining MLB in 2018 with the Angels, Ohtani had already hit 48 homers in Japan by age 23. Clearly, his power has only grown since then.
Dodgers’ Standings
As of Saturday, the Dodgers had a record of 56-39 and were leading their division by eight games over the Diamondbacks.
