The July MLB calendar is packed with events.
With the draft and All-Star Game coming up, the big focus is on the July 30 trade deadline. The excitement builds as we prepare for the latest rumors.
Recently, the Nationals were doing surprisingly well. They were around .500, which was enough to keep them in the NL wild-card race. But now they’ve lost 13 of their last 20 games, and it looks like GM Mike Rizzo might be ready to sell some players before the deadline. According to Ken Rosenthal, Katie Woo, and Patrick Mooney from The Athletic, outfielder Jesse Winker and reliever Dylan Floro could be traded soon. Other names like closer Kyle Finnegan and outfielder Lane Thomas might also be on their way out.
Phillies Planning Small Moves
The Phillies have been one of baseball’s best teams this year with a record of 58-32. Even though they’re doing great, they still want to make some small changes to get ready for October. Rosenthal, Woo, and Mooney report that Dave Dombrowski is looking for role players and bullpen depth because they already have star players who can change playoff series outcomes. Injuries might change their plans before July 30.
Fans may think these small moves are just what the team needs to stay strong for the playoffs.
Nimmo Wants Mets to Buy
The Mets have had a rollercoaster season but are back in contention for a wild-card spot after a strong June with a 16-8 record. This puts them in a tricky position as they approach the trade deadline.
David Stearns has tough decisions ahead since they need more roster strength but will soon get ace Kodai Senga back from injury. Starting pitchers are highly sought after at this time of year due to limited availability.
Unsurprisingly, Mets players want to win now rather than later. Brandon Nimmo has been vocal about wanting Stearns and owner Steve Cohen to buy new talent before the deadline hits: “Any chance that I get, I kind of throw that in there,” he said.
As someone who’s committed until 2030 and having another stellar season at age 31, Nimmo has every reason to push for what he believes will help his team succeed. Whether his wishes come true remains uncertain but adds an interesting twist to what might happen next in Queens.
What do you think? Should teams make big changes or stick with what they have?
