The Washington Nationals sent CJ Abrams down to Triple-A with just nine days left in the 2024 MLB season.
“It wasn’t performance-based,” said Davey Martinez, hinting at internal reasons for the move. Instead of heading to Rochester, he’ll train in West Palm Beach since minor league seasons are over.
Abrams’ demotion seems like a punishment or a wake-up call. He’ll lose about $36,000 if he doesn’t return this season. Jim Bowden shared more details on Twitter:
CJ Abrams was 8 for his last 17…the NL All-Star was optoned today. Why? because according to witnesses he was out until 8 am at Bally Casino before a 1pm game. #Nationals GM/Prez said not on his watch and to the minor leagues he went.

Martinez confirmed the reason was an “internal issue.” GM Mike Rizzo added, “We’re all aware of the report, but beyond that it’s an internal issue that we will keep in the family.”
Internal Issues and Performance Struggles
Fans might wonder why such a talented player is facing these issues. Service time isn’t affected since Abrams already has a full year under his belt. This means his free agency timeline remains unchanged.
Abrams missed four games recently due to a shoulder problem and hasn’t been performing well lately.
Drafted sixth overall in 2019 and acquired during the Juan Soto trade, Abrams showed promise last year and early this season. But now he’s back in minors as of Sept. 21.
Nasim Nuñez will likely take over shortstop duties for now. He’s been on Washington’s roster but only started 13 games so far. Nuñez is known for his defense but needs more batting practice.
With their record at 68-86, postseason hopes are dashed for the Nationals again since their World Series win in 2019. Trey Lipscomb has been called up to replace Abrams.
