MLB Offseason Grades: Mets, Dodgers Lead with Top Marks

Spring training is just around the corner, with pitchers and catchers reporting in about a month. As teams wrap up their offseason moves, let’s grade how each club has done so far this winter.

The Arizona Diamondbacks made one of the biggest splashes, landing ace Corbin Burnes to lead their rotation. They also picked up Josh Naylor to replace Christian Walker at first base, though Chase Field’s dimensions could limit Naylor’s power numbers.

The Oakland A’s actually spent some money this winter – by their standards anyway. They’re up to $70 million in payroll after adding Luis Severino, Gio Urshela and others. Still a far cry from the $100 million they hinted at earlier.

The Atlanta Braves have been surprisingly quiet. After trading Jorge Soler, many expected a big move. Instead, they’re counting on Bryan De La Cruz in the outfield and some question marks in the rotation.

The Baltimore Orioles made logical but unexciting moves like adding Tyler O’Neill and Gary Sánchez. With a young core in place, they seem to be missing a chance to really go for it.

The Boston Red Sox get high marks for their pitching additions. The Garrett Crochet trade looks smart, and taking a chance on Walker Buehler could pay off big time.

The Chicago Cubs landed a superstar in Kyle Tucker without giving up too much. If they can extend him long-term, this could be a franchise-changing move.

The Los Angeles Dodgers keep rolling after last year’s mega-moves. Adding Blake Snell, Michael Conforto and others keeps them as MLB’s team to beat.

The New York Mets get an A just for landing Juan Soto. But new GM David Stearns didn’t stop there, rebuilding the rotation with interesting arms like Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes.

The biggest disappointments? The Mariners, Padres and Twins have barely done anything despite having playoff aspirations. There’s still time before Opening Day, but the clock is ticking.
