MLB Confirms A’s Games in Sacramento

The Athletics will be playing in Sacramento starting in 2025.

MLB confirmed that the A’s will make Sutter Health Park their home for the 2025 season. “It is a certainty that the A’s will play their 2025 season in Sacramento as planned,” said MLB. They are working with the MLBPA on transition details.

Sutter Health Park, which can hold about 14,000 fans, needs upgrades to meet league standards. Renovations have started, but there are still worries about the turf field . Scott Boras shared his thoughts with the San Francisco Chronicle:

> “Being raised in Elk Grove, the summer heat there in the Sacramento area is extraordinary, and if they put artificial turf there, that’s going to magnify the impact of the heat,” agent Scott Boras said. “In major-league stadiums where there is Astroturf, there’s a dome so that the turf doesn’t absorb heat. Those of us who played on Astroturf when it’s outdoors understand it just releases heat, and you get up into 120-130 degrees in your shoes because you’re absorbing that heat.”

> “And what amendments have been made to allow for indoor pregame work? These are player concerns that have to be addressed. Protection of players’ health and safety is imperative and from a business perspective — we are dealing with elite athletes.”

Concerns About The Turf:

The park plans to use turf similar to Chase Field’s in Arizona. But unlike Chase Field’s retractable roof and climate control, Sutter Health Park’s turf will be exposed to open air all summer long.

Fans might wonder if this move will affect player performance due to extreme heat.

The clubhouses and indoor training areas also need upgrades like those made at Sahlen Field when Buffalo hosted Blue Jays games in 2020-21. Sutter Health Park favors hitters more than Oakland’s spacious RingCentral Coliseum.

Sharing The Stadium:

The A’s will share Sutter Health Park with the River Cats (Triple-A team for Giants). When one team plays at home, the other will be on tour.

Future Plans:

The Athletics plan to stay in Sacramento from 2025 through possibly 2028 before moving into their new Las Vegas stadium.

What do you think about this move?
