The New York Mets have announced they will honor David Wright by retiring his No. 5 jersey in 2025 and inducting him into their Hall of Fame. This special event is scheduled for July 19 next year at Citi Field, right before the Mets play against the Cincinnati Reds.
David Wright, who will celebrate his 42nd birthday on December 20, dedicated his entire baseball career to the Mets. Drafted as the 38th overall pick in 2001, he played with them until September 2018. During those years, he achieved a remarkable batting average of .296/.376/.491 (133 OPS+), hit 242 home runs, stole 196 bases, and collected a total of 1,777 hits. Wright also earned seven All-Star selections and won two Gold Gloves and two Silver Sluggers awards while finishing in the top ten for MVP voting four times. His career WAR of 49.2 ranks him second in Mets history.
Despite numerous injuries affecting his back, neck, and shoulder that shortened his playing days , Wright still holds several franchise records for walks, hits, doubles, RBIs, and runs scored. Fans might feel that without these setbacks he’d be headed straight to Cooperstown.
Honoring a Legend:
Wright will join an elite group as the eleventh person to have their number retired by the Mets. This prestigious list includes iconic figures like Jackie Robinson (whose No. 42 is retired across MLB), Tom Seaver, Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Willie Mays, Keith Hernandez among others. The team has also honored broadcasters Ralph Kiner and Bob Murphy along with Bill Shea for their significant contributions.
