Mets Severino Mocks Former Team

The 2024 Subway Series between the Mets and Yankees will conclude next week.

Last month, the Mets swept two games from the Yankees at Citi Field. Now, it’s time for the Yankees to try and even the score in their home turf, the Bronx. On Friday, the Mets revealed that veteran left-handers Jose Quintana and Sean Manaea will pitch in these games. This means Luis Severino won’t face his old team again.

“We have a group chat with guys who stayed with the Yankees,” Severino shared on Friday. “They tease me, saying I’m scared of them. I told them, ‘I’m not scared of you guys. Right now you only have two good hitters.’ It’s always friendly competition.”

Severino isn’t entirely wrong! The Yankees heavily depend on Aaron Judge and Juan Soto . Since Giancarlo Stanton got injured on June 22, Judge and Soto are hitting .291/.431/.575 with 11 homers while others are struggling at .214/.283/.354 with just 16 homers over 19 games.

Yankees’ Offense Woes:

The silver lining for the Yankees is that Stanton might return soon after completing agility drills on Friday. Even without much help beyond Judge and Soto, they lead baseball by averaging almost five runs per game.

Fans might think this news brings hope for better days ahead.

Severino has had a solid comeback season so far with a 3.78 ERA over nearly 110 innings pitched while staying healthy—a big improvement from last year’s injury-riddled performance where he posted a dismal ERA of 6.65 over fewer innings.

Mets’ Recent Performance:

Since June started, Severino’s Mets boast MLB’s best record (25-13), sitting at third place in NL wild-card standings with an overall record of 49-46. Meanwhile across town—the Yankees hold fourth-best MLB record (58-40), trailing by one game in AL East race!
