Mets Promote Acuña Jr.’s Brother in NL Wild-Card Race

The New York Mets have called up Luisangel Acuña to the majors for his debut.

This decision came just before Francisco Lindor left Friday’s game due to back pain. To make room, they sent DJ Stewart down to the minors. Acuña, 22, was traded from the Texas Rangers in exchange for Max Scherzer during the 2023 trade deadline. He showed promise as a middle-infield prospect but hasn’t performed as expected with a .258/.299/.355 batting line and twice as many strikeouts as walks at Triple-A.

The Mets hope he can still be valuable by playing multiple positions. This year, he played shortstop, second base, and center field . He’s also fast and good at stealing bases—successful on 40 of 54 attempts this season and 80% overall in his minor-league career.

Roster Changes:

Recently, the Mets got Eddy Alvarez from the Boston Red Sox after Jeff McNeil broke his wrist and was ruled out for the rest of the season. Fans might think this move makes sense because Acuña could add depth and versatility to their lineup during a crucial playoff race.

As of Saturday, the Mets had an 81-66 record, holding onto the National League’s third wild-card spot with a one-game lead over Atlanta Braves. Both teams will face each other from Sept. 24-26 in what could be a decisive series.

That series is important for two reasons: it might decide who gets the wild-card spot and it will be the first time both Acuña brothers are present at an MLB game (though Ronald won’t play).

What do you think about these changes?
