The New York Mets brought Starling Marte back from the injured list on Sunday.
Marte, who had been out since June 22 due to a bone bruise in his right knee, is now batting fifth and playing right field. To make room for him, the Mets designated Ben Gamel for assignment. Before his injury, Marte played in 66 games and hit .278/.328/.416 with seven home runs, 30 RBIs, and 12 stolen bases.
Recently, the Mets have used Brandon Nimmo, Harrison Bader, and Jesse Winker in their outfield. Winker has struggled since joining from the Nationals . In 14 games with the Mets, he’s batted .289/.319/.333 with two extra-base hits; before that, he hit .257/.374/.419 in 101 games with Washington.
Mets Roster Changes:
Gamel appeared in 18 games for the Mets but only managed a .217 average with one RBI and one stolen base. The team now has a week to decide whether to place him on outright or release waivers. Given his six years of major-league service time, Gamel could choose free agency over an outright assignment.
Fans might be wondering if these changes will help improve the team’s performance.
The Mets currently hold a 64-59 record. They are nine games behind in the National League East but just one game away from securing the final NL wild-card spot. Up next is finishing their series against Miami Marlins before hosting Baltimore Orioles for three games starting Monday.
