Dustin May won’t be playing for the Dodgers this season due to surgery on his esophagus.
The team shared that May experienced sudden pain in his throat and stomach during dinner, which led to the surgery. “While at dinner on Wednesday, Dodger right-hander Dustin May experienced sudden pain in his esophagus and stomach that continued after he returned home,” said the Dodgers. “He contacted the medical staff and ultimately underwent successful surgery on his esophagus. May will not return to pitch for the Dodgers this season.”
May hasn’t pitched since last May due to a previous arm surgery. He was supposed to start rehab soon but now aims for 2025.
Dodgers’ Pitching Troubles:
Currently, seven of their pitchers are injured, leaving them with just four starters before the All-Star break. Here’s a quick look at their rotation:
1. Tyler Glasnow (back tightness)
2. Yoshinobu Yamamoto (rotator cuff strain)
3. Clayton Kershaw (shoulder surgery)
4. Walker Buehler (hip discomfort)
5. Gavin Stone
6. Tony Gonsolin (Tommy John surgery)
7. Dustin May (flexor tendon and esophagus surgery)
8. James Paxton
9. Emmet Sheehan (Tommy John surgery)
10. Landon Knack
11. Justin Wrobleski
Glasnow should be back soon, while Kershaw and Yamamoto might return later this season .
Fans might think it’s tough luck for the Dodgers with all these injuries.
May was once a top pitching prospect with a 3.10 ERA over 191 2/3 innings from 2019-23, but injuries have limited him recently.
In other news, the Dodgers lost a five-run lead against the Tigers on Saturday, ending in an extra-inning defeat (DET 11, LAD 9 in 10 innings). Despite recent losses, they still lead NL West with a 56-40 record.
