Mariners Unlikely to Fire Lead Exec Dipoto

The Seattle Mariners will keep Jerry Dipoto as president of baseball operations even if they miss the playoffs this year. Currently, the Mariners have a 71-70 record, trailing by 4.5 games in the American League West and five games in the AL wild-card race. This makes it likely they won’t make it to October baseball for the second year straight.

General manager Justin Hollander will also stay in his role. He was promoted last offseason. Dipoto has led the Mariners’ baseball operations since September 2015, with only one playoff appearance under his belt in 2022, which ended a 21-year drought. Despite this, they are on track for their fourth consecutive winning season.

Last month, however, there was a significant change when Scott Servais was replaced by Dan Wilson as skipper . Servais lost his job after a collapse that saw the Mariners blow a 10-game lead in AL West from June to July. Shockingly, he found out about his firing through social media rather than directly from Dipoto or anyone else at the Mariners.

Mariners since 2021

Here’s how they’ve performed:

<

Year Record Playoffs?
2024 71-70 10.9% chance per SportsLine
2023 88-74 No
2022 90-72 Yes, lost in ALDS
2021 90-72 No

Dipoto faced backlash last fall when he said his long-term goal was to win just over half of their games: “We’re actually doing the fanbase a favor by asking for their patience to win the World Series while we continue to build a sustainably good roster,” he explained.

Fans might think it’s frustrating that despite all these changes and promises, results haven’t met expectations yet.

The Mariners start a weekend series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night and have three crucial games left against the Houston Astros soon after. They’ll need to make up ground quickly if they want any shot at catching up.

What do you think? Will they make it?
