Kodai Senga Exits Mets Debut with Calf Strain

Kodai Senga of the New York Mets made his season debut on Friday night but left the game due to a calf injury.

He hurt himself running off the mound to avoid an infield pop-up in the sixth inning against the Atlanta Braves. Before this, Senga was doing great, allowing only two runs and striking out nine batters over 5 1/3 innings.

Senga had missed the start of the season because of a shoulder injury. He allowed six runs over 13 innings in four minor-league rehab games before coming back.

The Mets lost rookie Christian Scott to a UCL sprain last week, and now Senga is injured too. They planned to use a six-man rotation including Sean Manaea, Tylor Megill, David Peterson, Jose Quintana, and Luis Severino. Now they might need to adjust their plans.

Impact on Mets’ Pitching Depth:

Losing Senga could stretch their pitching depth thin. José Buttó has been valuable in the bullpen . Adrian Houser was designated for assignment to make room for Senga. Joey Lucchesi is available in Triple-A if needed.

Fans might worry about how these injuries will affect their favorite team’s performance.

With the trade deadline approaching on Tuesday, there’s limited time for acquiring new pitchers. The Mets are already looking for bullpen help even after adding Phil Maton and Ryne Stanek.

Senga signed a five-year deal worth $75 million after leaving Japan’s Fukuoka Softbank Hawks where he had an impressive record last season with a 2.98 ERA and 202 strikeouts over 166 1/3 innings.

The Mets entered Friday’s game with a solid record of 54-48 and have been performing exceptionally well since June 3rd with a record of 30-13—the best in baseball during that period.
