Heading into 2024, the Toronto Blue Jays have had a rollercoaster of seasons.
They reached the playoffs three out of the last four years but couldn’t win a single game in those appearances. This year, they ended with a disappointing 74-88 record, landing them at the bottom of the AL East for the first time since 2013.
Despite having many talented players, they just couldn’t perform well enough to make it count.
Kevin Gausman voiced his frustration: “I’m sick of the ‘talent’ talk,” he told the Toronto Sun. “We’re so talented, this and that. We’ve got to start winning games. We’ve got to figure it out. We’ve got to do it quickly. I’m only getting older. (Chris) Bassitt is only getting older. If we want it to happen with this group, it has to happen soon. So what are we going to do?”
The Jays were expected to win around 87 games this season according to betting odds, ranking eighth-highest in MLB predictions.
Blue Jays’ Underperformance:
Instead of meeting expectations, they ranked poorly—23rd in runs scored and 22nd in ERA. Fans might think it’s time for some big changes if they want better results next season.
This winter will be crucial for them as they decide their next steps. Rebuilding doesn’t seem like an option due to their expensive roster and aging players like Gausman mentioned.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette are key players who will become free agents after next season; extending their contracts should be a priority if they’re not planning on rebuilding.
We’ll see how things unfold; it’ll definitely be interesting watching what moves the Blue Jays make during offseason.
What do you think? Will they turn things around or continue struggling?
