In New York, Gleyber Torres was expected to have his best year with the Yankees.
At 27, he had a great 2023, smashing 25 homers and keeping strikeouts low. But this season began terribly for him. By June 1, he was hitting just .229 and making too many errors at second base. His power seemed to vanish without a trace.
During the All-Star break, Torres went to Tampa to work on his swing with Gio Urshela at their facility. He spent time there trying to regain confidence by practicing daily.
Turning Point in the Season:
Things started looking up for Torres in late June when he had three games in a row with two hits each. From June 28 to August 15, he improved his stats significantly, though not quite matching his power from last year. On August 16, Aaron Boone put him back as leadoff hitter where he hit .313/.386/.454 over the final stretch of games.
“I was surprised Boonie made me leadoff,” said Torres about Boone’s decision during tough times. “But it worked out well; I just trusted myself.” Fans might think this change saved his season.
In October’s playoffs, Torres has been on fire! He’s reached base five times out of six games and is batting .292/.433/.500 with more walks than strikeouts so far. In Game 2 against Cleveland Guardians in ALCS, he went three-for-five and scored twice!

Boone praised him after Game 2: “He struggled early but found himself later on…a real catalyst for us.”
Future Uncertainties:
Torres wants to stay with the Yankees long-term but extensions are rare here; they haven’t talked about one yet either—Juan Soto takes priority now while payroll cuts loom ahead according Hal Steinbrenner’s comments last May saying current spending isn’t sustainable anymore.
With Soto being top priority plus possible budget cuts coming soon means cheaper options like Caleb Durbin from Triple-A could replace him next season instead—making it easier letting go if needed since much of this year wasn’t great until recently turning things around late into playoffs now nearing pennant wins thanks largely due efforts leading off lineup lately again lately too!
