The Arizona Diamondbacks have picked up left-handed reliever A.J. Puk from the Miami Marlins in a trade.
In return, the Marlins will get two prospects: Deyvison De Los Santos and Andrew Pintar.
Puk, who is 29 years old, started the season as a pitcher but struggled and was moved back to the bullpen. As a reliever this year, he has an impressive 2.08 ERA with 33 strikeouts and six walks in just over 30 innings .
Trade Details:
De Los Santos is considered the key player for the Marlins in this deal. The 21-year-old has hit 28 home runs across Double-A and Triple-A games this season. Over his minor-league career, he boasts a .293/.343/.508 slash line. Pintar, who is 23 and played at Brigham Young University, has batted .266/.355/.413 in two minor-league seasons and recently moved up to Double-A.
Fans might think this move shows Arizona’s serious about making another playoff run.
The Diamondbacks were on the fence about buying or selling before the July 30 trade deadline. But trading for Puk shows they want to strengthen their team for another shot at the playoffs. They probably can’t catch up to the Dodgers in their division but are close in the wild-card race with many teams still in contention.
Arizona currently holds a record of 53-50 and trails just one game behind San Diego Padres for that final wild-card spot .
