The Arizona Diamondbacks are betting big on their young shortstop Geraldo Perdomo, locking him up with a $45 million deal that’ll keep him in the desert through at least 2029.
The 25-year-old switch-hitter has really come into his own lately. He hit .273 last season with 21 doubles and showed he’s got some speed too, swiping nine bases in just 98 games.
It’s a pretty sweet deal for both sides. The D-backs get to keep their All-Star shortstop for the long haul, while Perdomo gets life-changing money years before he could’ve hit free agency.
The contract could get even better for Perdomo. If things go well, the deal could jump to $72 million with incentives and a fifth-year team option that would push the total to $57 million.
This isn’t just some random signing. Perdomo’s been with Arizona since they picked him up as a teenager from the Dominican Republic in 2016. He’s turned into exactly what they hoped for – a solid defender who knows how to get on base and make things happen.
The numbers back it up too. Over the last two seasons, he’s put up a really impressive 5.8 WAR in 242 games. For baseball fans who don’t live and die by the stats, that means he’s been one of the better shortstops in the game.
Arizona’s building something special here. They’ve already got stars like Corbin Carroll, Ketel Marte, and their new ace Corbin Burnes. After making it to the World Series in 2023, they’re clearly not done yet.
The D-backs are showing they’re serious about staying on top in the NL West. Locking up Perdomo is just their latest move to keep their young core together for what could be a really exciting run.
