Yankees’ ace Gerrit Cole had a tough game against the Red Sox on Saturday, resulting in a 7-1 loss.
During the game, Cole made an unusual decision to intentionally walk Rafael Devers with no runners on base and one out in the fourth inning when the Yankees were leading 1-0.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora had an interesting take on this move. He thought it was connected to Cole hitting Devers with a pitch in the first inning.
Unexpected Intentional Walk
Cora believed that Cole’s intentional walk showed he didn’t want to face Devers at all. “I felt like the first at-bat, he hit him on purpose,” said Cora via NESN. “He doesn’t wanna face him, that’s the bottom line.”
Later in the game, with bases loaded and nowhere to put Devers, Cole gave up a two-RBI single. In their first encounter of the game, Cole had hit Devers with an 0-1 cutter.
Fans might think this whole situation is quite suspicious.
Devers has always been a tough opponent for Cole. Before Saturday’s game, Devers was batting .341 against him with eight home runs since 2021. Their last match-up before this was on July 6th when Devers homered off Cole in his final at-bat.
