The Major League Baseball offseason for 2024-25 is in full swing, with big names like Juan Soto already securing deals. As the Winter Meetings wrap up, rumors about trades and free agents are swirling around every day.
Seattle Mariners are getting quite a few calls about Luis Castillo, their seasoned right-handed pitcher. Ken Rosenthal from The Athletic explains that the Mariners might consider trading Castillo if it means improving their current roster. They aren’t interested in prospects who won’t be ready for the big leagues anytime soon. Teams like the Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, and New York Mets have all shown interest in Castillo.
Castillo just celebrated his 32nd birthday and had a solid 2024 season with a 3.64 ERA over 175â…“ innings for Seattle. His career stats include an ERA+ of 120 and a WAR of 24.0 over eight MLB seasons. He’s got more than $72 million left on his contract through 2027, plus a $25 million vesting option for 2028 .
Astros’ Dilemma: To Keep or Not to Keep Bregman?
Alex Bregman is now a free agent after spending his entire career with the Astros so far. Houston seems ready to let him explore other options since they acquired Isaac Paredes from the Cubs as part of the Kyle Tucker trade and have eyes on Nolan Arenado from the Cardinals too. However, KPRC in Houston reports that there’s still some interest in bringing Bregman back into the fold.
Fans might wonder if keeping Bregman is worth it given all these moves by Houston.
Other teams like the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, and Tigers are also reportedly interested in adding Bregman to their rosters.
Bregman’s last season saw him hitting .260/.315/.453 with 26 homers and snagging his first Gold Glove across 145 games for Houston. Over nine seasons with them, he boasts an OPS+ of 132 and a WAR of nearly 40! He’s been an All-Star twice and even finished top ten twice in AL MVP voting.
