The St. Louis Cardinals have promoted Thomas Saggese to the major league team.
This move comes as Brendan Donovan deals with a foot injury, leaving a gap at second base since Nolan Gorman was sent back to Triple-A in August due to hitting issues. To make room for Saggese, Victor Scott II has been demoted to Triple-A.
Saggese, 22 years old, joined the Cardinals from the Texas Rangers in a trade involving Jordan Montgomery last year. R.J. Anderson ranked him as the No. 3 prospect for the Cardinals going into 2024. Anderson wrote: “Saggese, acquired from the Rangers as part of the return on Jordan Montgomery, might end up being a better player than he is a prospect… We think Saggese has done just that.”
This season at Triple-A Memphis, Saggese hit .253/.313/.438 over 125 games with 20 home runs and nine stolen bases. Though his overall stats seem average, he’s improved significantly in the latter half of the season and played mostly at shortstop for the first time.
Cardinals’ Current Situation:
The Cardinals are currently sitting at a record of 72-71 and are 6.5 games away from clinching the final wild-card spot in the National League. Fans might be hopeful this new addition could spark some late-season magic.
In his minor-league career spanning four seasons, Saggese has batted .285/.354/.488—a solid performance for a former fifth-round pick.
He will start Tuesday night against the Reds, batting seventh and playing shortstop.
