The Brewers have made a significant move right before the trade deadline.
On Sunday, they activated their All-Star closer Devin Williams from the 60-day injured list. Williams had been out since spring training due to stress fractures in his back and hasn’t pitched this season.
Williams, who turns 30 next month, has been one of the best relievers in recent years. From 2021 to 2023, he posted a remarkable 1.97 ERA and an impressive 38.7% strikeout rate. During his rehab stint in the minors, he struck out six batters in four scoreless innings .
Trevor Megill has done an excellent job filling in as closer this season with a record of 20 saves out of 22 chances and a solid ERA of 2.41 over 33⅔ innings. It’s not clear if Williams will immediately reclaim his role as closer or if the team will ease him back into action.
Brewers’ Bullpen Strategy:
Once Williams is fully back, here’s how manager Pat Murphy’s bullpen might look:
- Closer: RHP Devin Williams
- Setup: RHP Trevor Megill, RHP Joel Payamps
- Middle Relief: RHP Nick Mears, RHP Elvis Peguero
- Lefties: LHP Jared Koenig, LHP Hoby Milner
- Long Relief: RHP Jakob Junis, RHP Bryse Wilson
Fans might be excited to see how this revamped bullpen performs.
Milwaukee recently acquired Nick Mears from the Colorado Rockies despite his high ERA (5.56) and WHIP (1.50), focusing on his promising pitch data instead.
The Brewers are also looking to strengthen their rotation before Tuesday’s trade deadline at 6 p.m. ET.
With a record of 59-45 and leading the NL Central by six games, Milwaukee is just two games behind the Dodgers for the National League’s No. 2 seed and a Wild Card Series bye.
To make room for Williams on the roster, right-hander Janson Junk was designated for assignment.
