The MLB trade deadline is fast approaching on July 30, and teams are scrambling to make their final moves.
Astros general manager Dana Brown shared on MLB Network Radio that they are aiming for top-tier rotation help. “Try to go big and see if there’s a deal that makes sense for the organization,” Brown said. “If that doesn’t work, we’ll go down to mid-level and hopefully we can land something there. But it doesn’t hurt to ask. When you go through this, ask and thou shall receive sometimes.” The Astros have been dealing with injuries all season but still managed a strong record since June.
In other news, the Braves signed Whit Merrifield after losing Ozzie Albies to a fractured forearm. Merrifield was recently released by the Phillies after struggling this season but has a history of strong performances.
Fans might wonder if these moves will be enough for their favorite teams.
Astros Eyeing Major Pitching Talent
The Astros have faced numerous injuries in their pitching lineup, losing key players like Justin Verlander, Luis Garcia, Cristian Javier, Lance McCullers Jr., J.P. France, and José Urquidy. Despite these setbacks, they’ve climbed to the top of the American League West with an impressive 27-14 record since June began.
Merrifield Joins Braves
The Braves responded quickly to Albies’ injury by signing Merrifield and promoting prospect Nacho Alvarez for his big-league debut. Merrifield’s recent performance hasn’t been stellar—batting .199/.277/.295—but he brings experience and depth as Alvarez steps up.
Rays Scouting Yankees
Meanwhile, the Rays have been scouting the Yankees’ system extensively. This could indicate potential trade talks between the two teams before the deadline. Possible trade candidates from the Rays include Zach Eflin, Randy Arozarena, and Isaac Paredes.
Tigers Watching Orioles Prospects
On another front, Tigers scouts have been eyeing prospects from the Orioles’ Triple-A affiliate in Norfolk. The Orioles are interested in left-hander Tarik Skubal but no deals are imminent yet.
Mariners Place Ty France on Waivers
Lastly, Ty France of the Mariners has been placed on outright waivers according to Ryan Divish of Seattle Times. This move allows him to continue playing until he clears waivers or is claimed/traded. If he clears waivers without being claimed or traded, he could be sent down to minors unless he chooses free agency due to his service time rights.
France has had a decent season with a 94 OPS+ but is set to make nearly $7 million this year—a significant payroll consideration for any team looking at him.
What do you think about these moves? Will they pay off?
