The Chicago Cubs’ Cody Bellinger has chosen to stick with the team for 2025 by taking his $27.5 million player option, according to ESPN.
His contract also includes a $25 million option for 2026, which comes with a $5 million buyout. So, he’s guaranteed at least $32.5 million next year.
Last season, Bellinger hit .307/.356/.525 with 26 home runs and got MVP votes, though his contact quality wasn’t great . This made teams wary during the offseason, so he signed a one-year deal with two options in February as spring training began.
Chicago Cubs: Future Plans
In 2024, Bellinger batted .266/.325/.426 with 18 homers—pretty much what was expected based on his contact stats from the previous year. He’s still a solid defender and can play center or first base but shifted to right field this season because of Pete Crow-Armstrong’s skills.
The Cubs finished their second consecutive season at 83-79 in 2024 and missed the playoffs by six games. With Bellinger’s return solidifying their roster of position players, they might need more pitching like many other teams do.
Fans might wonder if this move will finally push them into postseason success next year.
