2025 MLB Draft Lottery Guide

The MLB’s third amateur Draft Lottery is happening soon in Dallas at the Winter Meetings. This lottery, part of an agreement between MLB and the MLBPA, aims to stop teams from losing on purpose to get better draft picks. Now, the first six picks are decided by this lottery.

Last year, the Guardians surprised everyone by winning the lottery and getting the top pick even though they didn’t have one of the worst records. They chose Travis Bazzana from Oregon State with that pick. The Reds also got lucky, jumping from 13th to 2nd place in line for picks. Meanwhile, despite having a rough season in 2023, the Athletics ended up with only the fourth pick.

2025 Draft Lottery Details

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, December 10th at 5:30 p.m. ET! You can catch all the action on MLB Network or stream it live on Fubo for free if you want to see which teams get those top spots.

Now let’s dive into what you need to know before Tuesday’s event.

Chances for Top Pick

Teams that didn’t make it to postseason games have a shot at snagging that No. 1 pick through this lottery system, but those who performed poorly have better odds. For instance, both Rockies and Marlins stand at a 22.5% chance each while others like Rays sit low with just a 1.5% chance.

Fans might find these odds exciting yet unpredictable as anything could happen during such lotteries!

Interestingly enough only two teams share identical chances this year instead of three like usual; quite an unusual twist!

Why Some Teams Aren’t Eligible?

The White Sox aren’t eligible because they lost too many games last year—121 losses! This makes them unable due to their revenue-sharing status since they had picked fifth last time around; hence no back-to-back picks allowed here if you’re paying into revenue sharing already… bummer!

Similarly excluded are Oakland A’s who’ve been picking high past years (6th then followed by another high rank) thus disqualifying themselves under rules preventing consecutive years’ participation when receiving shared funds continuously over three drafts straight—complex stuff indeed!

Yet remember nothing finalized until certain clubs exceeding financial thresholds face penalties moving them backward ten slots affecting overall sequence ultimately adjusting upwards remaining contenders naturally filling vacated spaces promptly thereafter…
